What is your process for creating custom tiles?

Each tile is laser engraved, then hand-painted and sealed, resulting in a dimensional, artisan finish. This process creates a refined, tactile quality that is distinct from printed designs.

Do you take on all custom requests?

I accept a limited number of custom commissions each month (generally 4-5) to ensure each set receives the level of attention and craftsmanship it requires.

Custom tile sets begin at $700+, with final pricing based on the scope and complexity of the design.

Due to the nature of the process, I’m typically unable to accommodate rush orders needed in under one month.

What is the timeline for custom tile sets?

Custom tile sets typically take approximately 6 - 8 weeks from the time your order is placed.

This timeline is an estimate and not guaranteed. Final timing depends on:

  • Design complexity

  • The time required to finalize your selections

  • Responsiveness during the design process

Delays in submitting your form or responding to questions will extend the timeline.

The most accurate and up-to-date timing can always be found in the “ship by” date listed on the product page, which is updated regularly.

Do I need to have artwork ready before ordering?

No - finished artwork is not required.

However, you do need to have a clear general direction or starting point for your set. This might include themes, motifs, or inspiration images that reflect the overall look you’d like to achieve.

I’m happy to refine and develop your ideas into cohesive designs, but I don’t begin from a completely open-ended concept. Providing a defined direction ensures a smooth process and a final result that feels intentional and well-designed.

How many icons or designs can I include in my custom set?

To keep the set cohesive and ensure every tile remains clear and playable, custom sets include the following design allowances:

  • Craks, Dots, and Bams: 1–2 icons/designs per suit

  • Jokers: Up to 5 unique designs (each design appears on 2 Jokers)

  • Flowers: Up to 4 unique designs

  • Winds (N, E, S, W): Up to 4 unique designs (1 per direction)

  • Dragons: Up to 3 unique designs (1 per Dragon)

  • Blanks: Blank tiles are not engraved. If a double-sided set is purchased, the backs of the blank tiles may be engraved as part of the back design.

Additional icons, alternate design options, or expanded customization beyond these allowances may be available for an additional design fee.

Please note that custom mahjong tiles are created at a very small scale. In many cases, fewer, stronger design elements create a more beautiful and readable finished set than trying to incorporate every possible idea.

Can you recreate any image or design I send?

Not all designs translate to this process.

Images with ultra-fine details, delicate linework, or very small elements (under ~1 mm) cannot be reliably achieved. These details may burn together, lose definition, or not hold paint cleanly.

Designs will be adapted as needed to ensure a clean, high-quality result that aligns with the capabilities of engraving and hand painting.

Will my tiles look exactly like the image I send?

No - tiles are interpretations, not exact reproductions.

Digitally rendered, AI-generated, or UV-printed designs often include levels of detail that are not achievable with engraving. My work reflects a more artisanal, dimensional aesthetic, and designs are refined accordingly.

How do I submit my design ideas?

All design selections must be submitted through the Tile Design Form.

This is required to:

  • Keep all selections organized in one place

  • Ensure accuracy across your set

  • Allow production to begin

Initial Design details sent through Etsy messages or email are not tracked for production.

Can I send my ideas through Etsy messages instead?

You’re welcome to share inspiration images or ask questions via messages. However, all initial design ideas must be entered into the form before work begins.

How detailed can my tile designs be?

For the best results, designs should feature:

  • Clean, intentional linework

  • Elements larger than ~1 mm

  • Simple, well-balanced compositions

Overly intricate designs will be simplified to maintain clarity and quality.

Will you adjust my designs if needed?

Yes. Designs are refined as needed to ensure they translate properly to engraving and meet the standard of the finished piece.

Can I customize the tile colors or backs?

The tiles themselves are sourced from a manufacturer that produces commercially available mahjong tiles in bulk.

Because of this, I’m not able to create or order custom colors for the backs of the tiles. Tile base colors are limited to what is available from the manufacturer.

However, you may choose to have the backs of your tiles engraved with a monogram or simple icon, which can then be hand-painted if desired.

All customization is focused on the engraving and hand-painted design, allowing for a highly personalized and cohesive set within these parameters.

Do you offer discounts or donations for events or organizations?

I’m honored to be considered for special events and charitable initiatives.

At this time, I’m not able to donate tile sets to organizations outside of those I personally support or work closely with.
